THEATER AAN HET VRIJTHOF & VARIOUS LOCATIONS

Friday 9 March
The South Netherlands Philharmonic: With Simone Lamsma to HollywoodConductor Dmitri Liss Violin Simone LamsmaKodály Peacock-Variations Enescu Romanian Rhapsody No.1 Korngold Violin Concerto From Bernstein’s Fancy Free: Suite
‘Breathtakingly wonderful!’ This is how American reviewers described Simone Lamsma’s performance of Korngold’s Violin Concerto. In the magical hands of Liss and Lamsma, this Violin Concerto becomes a heavenly rendition of the Jewish composer who had to flee from the Nazis and who became the founding father of the sound of Hollywood. Conductor Willem Mengelberg rightfully called the American-Austrian Korngold ‘a musician who has fallen from heaven’. This same Mengelberg commissioned Kodály to write the colourful Pea-cock Variations. Colour can also be found in Bernstein’s Fancy Free, which perfectly fits in that other ‘showbiz’ heaven of the USA: the glitz and glamour of Broadway.

Centre CéramiqueEendagsvliegen: Franco Gori – regional photography
The Italian-Limburg photographer Franco Gori was born in Lucca in 1952. This winter, Centre Céramique is presenting a retrospective exhibition about this passionate and involved photographer. The exhibition will highlight nearly 100 of Franco’s photographs. ‘Mayflies’ (eendags-vliegen in Dutch) is what he calls them. Today it is the latest news in the newspaper, and tomorrow that very same newspaper is used to wrap deep-fried fish on the market. As fleeting as the life of the mayfly. Typical of his work is that, regardless of the difficulty of the situation, the photographer always searches for representations of hope and strength in his images. The exhibition does not just present a near-one hundred intriguing pho-tographs, but it also tells the story of the light-heartedness of life in Limburg and serves as an ode to regional photography.
