The oldest and most iconic bistro in the Netherlands has a new owner as of 2025—after forty-two years. It was a moment of anticipation, as it was precisely the personal touch of the previous owner that made Sjiek what it was. But now, some time later, the nation can breathe a sigh of relief: the beloved, warm, and homely atmosphere that Café Sjiek is known for remains fully intact. That’s thanks to a trusted service team, now under the leadership of Luca Zeegers, who took over the establishment together with her partner, Wouter Houten.
But something special is also happening in the kitchen.
Together with long-time chef Lisbet Claes, who’s been with Sjiek since 1998, Wouter Houten is adding a touch of refinement to the menu—without ever going over the top. The same foundation, elevated to a slightly higher standard. Everything is freshly made, entirely in-house.
This is still one of the most delightful places to dine—whether inside the cozy café or on the spacious terrace overlooking the city park.
