A hip gastrobar located in an imposing doctor’s house on Doctor Haubenlaan in Maasmechelen. The concept of the restaurant by Frits Geussens and Bjorn Ramsak is based on the use of the Mibrasa charcoal oven for beautifully cooking meat and fish.
That is where the restaurant gets its name from: barbacoa is the South American translation for the specific way of grilling used here with great regularity. Besides using the charcoal oven, fresh local and seasonal products play the absolute leading role in Barbacoa’s cuisine. Thus, the restaurant has been the place to go for asparagus, mussels, baby lobster, fruits de mer and game dishes – à la carte or in the form of a monthly changing four-course menu – unchanged since its opening in 2016. Although with the arrival of a completely new team – in the kitchen as well as in the business – the execution of those seasonal and regional classics has been a bit more refined since the summer of 2022.
On the terrace at the back of the Barbacoa, it is great to relax in green surroundings when the weather is nice. And even if the weather is a bit less, you can sit here sheltered and dry.
