André Rieu 2019 Maastricht City Guide: highlights #3
André Rieu violinists and fills hotels
Also this year, Chapeau produced the english André Rieu Maastricht City Guide 2019 in collaboration with the worldstar André Rieu from Maastricht. The guide includes a number of articles from the city and the surrounding area. We will present a couple of highlights to you in the next two weeks.
André Rieu’s Vrijthof concerts have a tremendous effect on life in and around Maastricht in the month of July.
The concerts are a source of inspiration to many, such as a select group of violin students who will be enchanting visitors to Maastricht with the sound of beautiful music being played on the streets of the city centre. The Cultura Mosae Foundation’s ‘Culture on Sunday’ concert series aims to tie in with the programming of André Rieu’s summer evening concerts. Several violinists from the Conservatorium Maastricht (Music Academy), the MSM Quartet, the Eurasia Duo, and the Academy String Orchestra of Maasmechelen will be performing at various locations in Maastricht’s city centre on Sundays between 1 and 5 PM.
The highlight of these ‘Culture on Sunday’ concerts will take place on Sunday 21 July with a performance by the Academy String Orchestra. This is the string orchestra of the Maasmechelen Academy for Music, Dance, and the Dramatic Arts, and which is led by Cecile Awouters.
André Rieu’s concerts also have a big impact on the economy of not only the city but the entire region. The region’s hotel rooms are fully booked, all the way up to Eindhoven, Aachen, Liege, and Hasselt. Toine Scheerens from the Association of Maastricht Hoteliers explains this is the busiest time of the year. ‘People are strongly advised not to take leave during this period. We engage extra staff from all over the country. But the atmosphere is fantastic. Most of the hotels are decorated in a style appropriate to André Rieu. Laundries, restaurants, shops, and taxi companies are all operating at full capacity. We are very happy to welcome this musical maestro.’
